Abstract
The paper expounds the contributions of the Xiaolangdi Reservoir to the flood control and exposition of the Lower Yellow River and the new situation happened in recent years, and challenges which might be encountered during the later retaining stage of the reservoir, such as the control of size distribution of released from the reservoir, the increase of carrying capacity for the flow in the Lower Yellow River and the regulation of hyperconcentrated flow in the reservoir, etc. The paper also suggests that it is needed to establish a new water regulation model and operation mode of the reservoir under the new ideal of sediment regulation and deposition mitigation and to formulate a strategic decision system considering both the reservoir and the Lower Yellow River for the further regulation of the water and of the reservoir,so as to prolong the life span of the reservoir and ensure the safety of the Lower Yellow River.
