Abstract
Objective To evaluate the clinical effect of a surgical procedure to reconstruct socket with hydroxyapatite in the anopthalmic children. Methods Hydroxyapatite was wrapped up in the scleral or dura mater shell as a orbital implant. 56 consecutive patients were followed, 36 of them had been referred for primary enucleation, and 20 for secondary implant surgery. 6 patients had been drilled. Results There were no cases of orbital infection , implant extrusion, implant exposure or migration in 1-78 months of follow up. All children achieved a better facial appearance. Six elder children underwent drilling and peg placement and had excellent prosthesis motility. Conclusion The hydroxyapatite orbital implant give good cosmetic results with a low rate of complications, promotes orbital development, and helps to children's normal body and mind growth.
