Abstract
Objective To evaluate the clinical effect of a surgical procedure to reconstruct socket with hydroxyapatite in the anophthalmic patient.Methods Hydroxyapatite was wrapped up in the scleral or dura mater shell as a orbital implant.127 consecutive patients were followed,66 of whom had been referred for primary enucleation of evisceration,and 61 for secondary implant surgery.74 patients had been drilled.Results No inflammation or implant extrusion occurred in 1~36 months of follow up.Five of 127 patients had implant exposure.The movement of the prosthesis is excellent when the implant is coupled to the prothesis via a peg.Conclusions The hydroxyapatite orbital implant give good cosmetic results with good motility of the artificial eye and is associated with a low rate of complications.
