Analysis of Surgery Effect on Giant Cell Tumor of Bones in 39 Cases

Objective To evaluate the clinical results of the giant cell tumor of bones treated with curettage or en block resection.Methods By reviewing and analyzing the 39 patients with giant cell tumors.They were treated by curettage and en block resection from 2003 to 2008.Results All the cases were followed up for 4.1 years in average.2 of 8 cases treated with curettage and bone grafting relapsed.3 of 18 cases treated with curettage and packing with cement relapsed.1 of 8 cases treated with inactivation-replantation relapsed.None of 3 cases treated with en block resection and fusion of joint relapsed.None of 2 cases treated with en block resection and artificial joint prosthetic replacement relapsed.1 of 2 cases in Grade Ⅲ treated with curettage relapsed.1 of 7 cases in Grade Ⅲ treated with en block resection relapsed.The local recurrence rate was 19.2% in the curetted group and 7.7% in the en block resection group.The overall satisfactory rate of therapy was 82.0%,however,the unsatisfactory rate was 18.0%.Conclusion Curettage must chalk the boundary of surgery.Packing with cement was effective.En block resection was a safe method for patients in Grade Ⅲ.
