Analysis of curettage and en block resection of giant cell tumor of long bones

Objective To evaluate the clinical results of the giant cell tumors of long bones treated with curettage or en block resection. Methods 72 patients with giant cell tumors of extremities were treated by curettage and en bloc resection since 1984 to 2002. They are 31 males and 41 females and the ages ranged from 14 to 66 and the mean is 32.4 years old. All these patients were followed-up. Results The local recurrence rate was 23% in the curetted group and 9% in the en block resection group. The clinical results were excellent. Conclusion Both curettage and en block resection is effective and safe in treatment of giant cell tumors of long bones.
