Abstract

Objective To evaluate the preventive effect of carotid endarterectomy on ischemic stroke in the aged with symptomatic carotid stenosis. Methods According to the region and severity of stenosis, different procedures of carotid endarterectomy were employed in 8 patients with symptomatic extracranial carotid stenosis. Results All the procedures were successful. The cerebral ischemic symptoms were ameliorated after the operation in all the patients. The main postoperative complications included local hematoma and hoarse voice. Conclusions The carotid endarterectomy is a safe and effective method to treat the symptomatic extracranial carotid stenosis, and of value to the prevention of ischemic stroke in the aged with symptomatic carotid stenosis.
