Abstract

Objective To investigate the carotid endarterectomy indications, surgical techniques and anesthesia methods in the patients with carotid stenosis. Methods The clinical data of 16 patients with carotid stenosis, who underwent carotid endarterectomy from November,2004 to December,2009,were analyzed retrospectively. Of 16 patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis,2 suffered from the moderate carotid stenosis and 14 from severe carotid stenosis. Carotid endarterectomy was performed under the general anaesthesia in all the patients. The hypertension was induced during the operation. Results The transcranial Doppler ultrasound showed that the carotid artery flow was significantly increased after the operation compared to that before the operation. Transient ischemic attack(TIA) did not recurred after the surgery during the following-up for 6 months in 12 patients who had TIA before the operation. One patient with diabetes mellitus and hypertension died from the cerebral hemorrhage. The others who were followed up from 6 months to 2 years were signficantly improved in the cerebral ischemia symptoms. Conclusion Carotid endarterectomy is a safe and effective method to treat the carotid stenosis.
