Abstract

In his reign, Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang supported Taoism by placing Lao Zi and other related Taoists in prominent positions and well-treat its believers. Meanwhile, he controlled Buddhism but did not prohibit it. The paper offered three features of his policy in religion and pointed out their socio-cultural background.
