Abstract
There are four kinds of statements in Buddhist books and records as for the time of Emperor Liangwu's abandonment of Taoism for Buddhism.Though contradictory here and there, these records are generally dependable.According to the research on the related persons recorded in On Dialectics by Fa Lin,the time of Emperor Liangwu's abandonment of Taoism for Buddhism should be in later Da Tong(539-545).Emperor Liangwu's decision was connected with his intention to take the position of the Surplice Master. The abandonment of Taoism for Buddhism had little influence on Taoism. In early Tang Dynasty when the controversy between the two sides became increasingly fierce,Buddhist monks took advantage of the Emperor's incident in favor of Buddhism and against Taoism.
