Abstract

The settlement of a building’s foundation is quite hazardous to its normal use. As the calculation of foundation settlement applying layer and total method often is often different from the actually measured final settlement, it is necessary to explore the relationship between the final settlement and the corresponding foundation parameters of the building and to express the relationship as an empirical formula to predict and control the final settlement of the building. This paper presents an empirical formula based on the theory of elastic semi-sphere bodies. The formula can be used to which demonstrates the influencing factors and can quite precisely predict the final settlement of a shallow foundation building
