Abstract

Objective To evaluate the antihypertensive efficacy and safety of valsartan combined with indapamide in patients with essential hypertension. Methods Sixty essential hypertensive patients were enrolled randomly into valsartan and benazepril groups. Valsartan 80 mg combined with indapamide 2.5 mg qd were given to valsartan group for 32 weeks, Benazepril 10 mg and indapamide 2.5 mg qd were given to benazepril group for 32 weeks. Results After treatment BP were decreased signifcantly in both groups. BP was reduced from 172.2±17.5/105.3±10 5 mmHg to 138.2±16.4/84.4±9.6 mmHg in valsartan group; from 170 4±17.6/104.5±10 2 mmHg to 135.3±17/82.4±10 2 mmHg in benazepril group( P 0 01, respectively vs before) with no significantly difference between two groups. Side effects such as cough(15%) and diarrhea(3%) were found in benazepril group only. Conclusion Combination of valsartan with indapamide is effective, safe and well tolerated in the treatment of essential hypertension. Their efficacy is analogous to that of benazepril combined with indapamide with less side effects.
