Abstract

The final goal of teaching a foreign language is to cultivate the students communicative competence. Classroom teaching plays an important part in foreign language teaching. Therefore teaching methods are a leading factor in cultivating the students communicative competence. Based on some investigation and under the guidance of the new teaching principles, this paper discusses the following methods adopted in teaching: context conjecture and reading-analysis methods applied to vocabulary teaching, interactive approach applied to dialogue teaching as well as the communicative approach applied to text teaching. It compares the communicative approach with the traditional teaching method in teaching objective, teaching content, teaching mode, teacher s teaching procedures, interactive mode, teacher s role, students role and classroom atmosphere.
