Abstract

Objective:To investigate the expression of S100A4 gene in human breast cancer and evaluate its clinical significance. Methods: The expression of S100A4 protein was investigated by means of immunohistochemistry in 55 cases of breast cancer and 16 cases of breast benign diseases. The relation of S100A4 expression to clinicopathological characteristics and postoperative survival time was statistically analyzed. Results: The expression of S100A4 was significantly different between breast cancer and benign diseases (P0.05).The positive rates of S100A4 expression in the axillary lymph nodes metastasis, multiple lymph nodes metastasis(≥4 nodes) and postoperative local recurrence or distant metastasis group were obviously higher than corresponding control groups (P0.05).The positive rates of S100A4 expression in survival time≥5 years group were lower than those in patients survival time 5 years group (P0.05).Expression of S100A4 had no relation with age of patients, tumor size, tumor pathological type, the clinical TNM stage, ER, PR expression and menses status (P0.05). Conclusion: The increase of S100A4 protein expression is significantly associated with tumor progression in breast cancer ,and it may be considered as a valuable marker for predicting the biological behavior and metastasis for breast cancer.
