Study on Jingxue by Wang Guo-wei

Wang Guo-wei is a representative of modern history study and was once regarded as Pioneer of New History Study.His studies on literature,philosophy,history and so on are far more outstanding than his research on Jingxue due to the fact that Jingxue was neglected in modern times.However,after he took his travel to Japan and turned his research focus from literature and philosophy to history,Jingxue became a break-through for his great achievements in the later years.To Wang Guo-wei,Jingxue did not belong to Jinwen tradition as seen by Kang Youwei,neither did it belong to tradition perceived by Zhang Taiyan.It's no doubt that his work bears the most distinctive features in the argument on Jinwen and during late Qing and early Minguo period: through his study on the meanings of in Shiji,he reveals the real sense of the works in early Han Dynasty;through his similar study on in Hanshu,he makes clear the meanings of the works in early Eastern Han Dynasty;by studying Shuowenjiezi,he understands what is discussed in Shuowen;by studying the classics of Wei Dynasty carved in three different script styles,he understands the Guwen Theory in Wei,Jin and Six Kingdoms;It is also through his systematic study on Han school of thoughts that he realizes the significance of turning from script style to school of thoughts.In a word,by employing a new perspective,that is,by taking the advantage of the newly discovered new materials such as the excavated Jiaguwen as well as Jinwen(金文),Wang Guo-wei enables the research on Jingxue and its history to be more convincing and reliable.
