Prevalence and Risk Factors of Obesity in Elementary School Children in Guangzhou

Objective To analyze the prevalence and risk factors of obesity in elementary schools in Haizhu district in Guangzhou.Methods Guidelines of Body mass index(BMI) reference norm for screening overweight and obesity in Chinese children and adolescents were used to diagnosis obesity and overweight.The children from the 3 elementary schools were investigated about risk factors by questionnaire of obesity.Results The total obesity rate were 5.82%,6.57%and 5.11% for boys and girls respectively.The obesity rate is difference among age groups;the prevalence of obesity was higher in 11 year-old.The obesity rates of boys and girls have no difference.The risk factors for obesity are eating fast and parents' obesity.Conclusion It's a urgent task to act on a series of effective measures to prevent and cure the obesity of adolescents in Guangzhou.
