Scientific Spirit at an Ebb: the Tendency of VulgarizationExpressed in the Concept of Science of Modern China

The tradition of a scientific spirit, together with the experimental technology, constitutes the foundation of the development of sciences in the West. In the course of learning sciences from the West, the thinkers of modern China, proceeding from the principle of utility, accepted the tradition of technology, but at the same time neglected and even rejected the tradition of the Western scientific spirit. Furthermore, they even dissimilated the scientific spirit and scientific rational faculty into a kind of technological medium. Therefore, the concept of science of modern China was filled with a powerful tendency of utilitarianism and vulgarization. This tendency has a very serious negative impact on the further development of China′s sciences.
