Abstract
AIM:To assess the clinical and microbiologi c effects of subgingival scaling with ultrasonic (perio proline) and hand instrume nts.METHODS:20 symmetric teeth in 7 patients with periodontiti s were selected and randomly assigned by a split mouth design to test(ultrasonic ) or control(hand).The time required for each instrumentation was made during th e treatment and periodontal indices(BOP, PD)were recorded just before and 0,7,14 days after treatment. The effects of treatments on the subgingival microflora w ere evaluated by culture studies of subgingival plaque samples taken before and 0,7,14 days after subgingival scaling.RESULTS:The hand and ultrasonic instrumentations were equally effective in reducing PD and BOP. There is no difference between two groups.Both treatments reduced the count of total colony forming unit(CFU) and periodontal pathogens. While the treatment with the perio proline device required less time than with hand instrumentation.CONCLUSION:The results indicate that subgingival scaling with perio proline could effectively improve clinical and microbiologic parameters of patients with periodontitis. And it is a highly efficient device comparing with hand instrument.
