The analysis of the knowledge about tobacco and the smoking behavior in the civil servants, teachers and doctors of Tianjin.

Abstract

Objective To understand the related knowledge about tobacco and the smoking behavior in key population including civil servants,teachers and doctors in Tianjin. Methods Using the simple random sampling method,1000 doctors (from 4 of tertiary hospitals,10 of second-class hospitals and 10 of community service centers),600 teachers (from 4 colleges,10 middle schools and 10 primary schools) and 404 civil servants (from 3 municipal government departments and 6 district government branches and 6 offices in sub-district and town) were selected from Hexi district,Beichen district and Ninghe county in May of 2008. Results The smoking rate was 20.5%,current smoking rate was 17.5%. The smoking rate in male and female were 48.4% and 0.5%,respectively. The smoking rate was 31.9% in civil service,16% in teachers and 18.6% in doctors. Among the subjects,59.7% of them denied the viewpoint that the cigarette with low tar and nicotine was less harmful to body,46.7% denied the viewpoint that the filter tip can bring down the harm of smoking,11.6% denied the viewpoint that nicotine was the chemical substances which cause the many kinds of cancer,93.6% denied the viewpoint that passive smoking was less harmful to body,84.2% agreed with the viewpoint that smoking addiction was a kind of chronic disease. 80% subjects supported enforcement of complete forbidding smoking in hospital,college and school,the government offices,meeting rooms,transportation. 71.4% and 43.0% subjects supported forbidding the smoking in the restaurant and taproom,respectively. Most of subjects thought the lung cancer,emphysema,coronary heart disease had related with smoking. Conclusion The male smoking rate in civil servants,teachers and doctors was still higher; we need strengthen the health education and health promotion in the tobacco knowledge and the harmfulness of smoking. We should draw up the regulation of forbidding smoking in the publics in Tianjin city.
