CT-guided percutaneous needle biopsy for the diagnosis of bone tumors and tumor-like lesions:a comparative study with surgical pathology

Objective To assess the diagnostic value of CT-guided percutaneous needle puncture biopsy in diagnosing bone tumors and tumor-like lesions by comparing it with the surgical pathology.Methods Three hundred and sixty-two patients with surgically-and pathologically-proved bone tumors and tumor-like lesions,who had received CT-guided percutaneous needle biopsy,were selected for this study.The needle biopsy findings were compared with the surgical and pathological results.Results Percutaneous needle biopsy was successful in all 362 patients.Both needle biopsy diagnosis and surgical-pathological diagnosis were obtained in all patients.In 285 cases the needle biopsy diagnosis accorded with the surgical-pathological findings,while in 77 cases the results were not in accordance with each other.The histological qualitative diagnostic accuracy rate was 78.7%(285/362).Conclusion As a safe and effective technique,CT-guided percutaneous needle puncture biopsy is of great clinical value for diagnosing bone tumors and tumor-like lesions,although a comprehensive and scientific analysis of the clinical manifestations,imaging findings and together with pathologic results is of capital importance in clinical practice.The diagnostic accuracy is closely related to the lesion's pathologic type and size.
