Comparative Studies on Past Tense in English and Korean

Abstract

Korean past tense can express three kinds of past events:took place at a definite past time,took place in the past and continued for some time,took place in the past and continue till speech time.English past tense can only express the first two kinds.In both English and Korean,past tense can express present time and future time.English past tense expresses subjunctive mood and politeness while Korean past tense expresses certainty,repetition or progressive.
