Breeding of 898A,A New Indica Rice CMS Line of Good Quality

898A,which was developed by Hunan Jinjian Seed Ltd.and Changde Agricultural Science Research Institute from 1997 to 2004,derived from crossing the selected F7 plants of Zhong 9B/Deshan B to Jin 23A with successive backcrossing method,is an early-maturing WA type indica CMS line.It shows not only desirable agronomic characters,good plant type,suitable composition of panicles,complete and stable male sterility,but also better grain quality,whose main quality characters were up to the second class standards of fine quality rice of the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture.Surveyed by experts in Hainan in 2004i,t is characterized that the rate of sterile plants was 100%t,he percentage of sterile pollens was 99.99%,and the self seed setting percentage was 0.1%,all of these sterile indexes almost reached the standards of Hunan for CMS line.It is also characteristic of good flowering habits,early flowering time,high stigma exsertion rate,high outcrossing seed setting rate,high hybrid seed production yield,good combining ability,strong yield heterosis of its hybrid combination.898A was certified and released by the Hunan Provinical Crop Variety Release Committee in February 2005.
