Abstract
AIM: To observe clinical efficacy and safety of carvedilol in treating essential hypertension and compare with metoprolol. METHODS:One hundred and four-forty patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension were divided into:carvedilol group (n=72;(61±s 7)a ) received carvedilol 10-20 mg, po, bid and metoprolol group (n=72;(62±8)a ) received metoprolol 25-50 mg, po, bid, for 6 wk. RESULTS: The total effective rates were 81 % for carvedilol group, and 72 % for metoprolol group, respectively. The obvious effctive rates were 44 % for carvedilol group, and 36 % for metoprolol group, respectively. There was no significant difference between the two groups(P 0.05). After 6 wk treatment, the heart rates of all patients were significantly decreased. At the end of wk 6 the T/P of SBP and DBP of ABPM were 61.2 % and 50.3 % in carvedilol group and microalbuminuria was significantly decreased. There was significant difference between the two groups (P0.01). The most adverse reactions were 19 %, 18 %, respectively, but mild and tolerable. CONCLUSION:Carvedilol is effective, safe in treating mild to moderate essential hypertension, and there is a good protective action to nephros.
