Abstract
XIE Zhang-ting's ideas on ci poetry in the late Qing dynasty are mainly embodied in three aspects. Firstly, his theory of ci volume demonstrates great originality and strong critical value, carrying equal significance in the late Qing dynasty ci circle as the popular theories of projection, profoundity, and bold features. Secondly,XIE disapproved of Zhang Huiyan's interpretation of ci poetry, whose use of analogy in cireading was proved to be an easy cause of deviation or distortion of meaning in deliberate search for projection in ci. Influenced by Tan Xian,XIE proposed the new approach of ci interpretation that one's mind will find projection in his/her reading ,which approaches modern interpretion theory. Thirdly, with strong awareness of establishing regional ci theories,XIE occupied a leading position in the theory of ci in the late Qing dynasty.
