Comparison and contrast of linguistics in China and western countries in 19~(th) century

The linguistics study in China experienced a short brilliance in the 19th century.But what was studied was still the language itself,that is to say,the study was in the first period of linguistics.Meanwhile,the intellectual study in western countries developed quickly with the characteristics of modern society.The theory and methods of Historical Comparative Linguistics were developed and perfected;General Linguistics appeared;and the theory of New Grammar was completed.There is something in common and something different in the development of linguistics in China and in western countries.But the differences weigh more.We should learn something from the contrast for the improvement of Chinese Linguistics.
