Breeding and Application of New Late Indica Hybrid Rice Combination Sanxiangyou 714

Sanxiangyou 714, developed from a new CMS Line Sanxiang A with fine quality as the female parent and a new restorer line yo714 as the male parent by the Hengyang Agricultural Science Research Institute, is a new three-line indica hybrid rice combination for late cropping season. It was characteristic of good grain quality, high yield, suitable maturity and wide adaptability. It had a yield of 7.12 t/hm2 on average, 3.77% higher than that of the check hybrid Shanyou 46, in two years (2001-2002) of the Southern China Regional Trials. Among twelve tested grain quality indices, ten reached the second-class standards of fine quality rice issued by the Ministry of Agriculture of China. It was registered and released by the Crop Variety Appraisal Committee of China in October, 2004. The breeding procedure of Sanxiangyou 714 and its major characteristics, cultivation and hybrid seed production techniques were introduced in this paper.
