Abstract
A Dirge to Jingjie Hermit and Its Preface by Yan Yannian, the literary giant of the Song times in the Northern and Southern Dynasties, is the first essay on Tao Yuanming now available. This paper makes a commentary on it, and gives an analysis of Tao Yuanming's deeds and thoughts, his achievements in literature as well as Tao and Yan's friendship and similarities, from which we can draw a conclusion that in the early years of Song times in the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Tao Yuanming had held an important place in the literary world.
