On the Concept of Zhenren in Zhuang Zi's Book Da Zong Shi

The concept of Zhenren was not included in Zhuang Zi's theory on human personalities. The Chinese character 真(zhen)might originally be another charater 贞, which is associated with mystery. The term Zhenren used by Zhuang Zi can be found only in his Four Arguments on Zhenren, an article in the book Da Zong Shi. Therefore, it can be inferred that the concept did not gain the equal status to the other three ones in Zhuang Zi's theory,Zhiren (perfect beings), Shenren (immortal beings), and Shengren (holy beings).Furthermore, the concept goes against his philosophy that one should pursue mental happiness instead of physical one. We can conclude that Four Arguments on Zhenren were written by the scholars after Zhuang Zi.
