Abstract

Objective:To investigate the expression of heat shock protein 70(HSP70)in the rat brain after epileptic seizures. Methods:A pentylenetetrazole(PTZ) induced seizure model was used and the expression of HSP70 and neuronal damage were studied by immunohistochemistry and histopathology methods. Results:HSP 70 immunoreactivity(IR) was not detected in the brain of empty control rats.but was observed in the brain of affected rats at 12h following PTZ injection, and it reached the peak at 24h.HSP 70 IR declined 3 days after PTZ injection and completely disappeared after 7 days.HSP 70 IR was detected mainly in the cortex(temporal, piriform cortex) and hippocampus(CA1、CA3、CA4 sector).Injured neurons were also found there in histopathological examination. Conclusion:Since HSP 70 was found extensively in the rat brain after PTZ induced seizure,HSP 70 expression is a valuable early marker of neuronal injury.
