COGNITION OF WORDS' PRAGMATIC MEANING FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE RELEVANCE THEORY

Abstract

This paper analyzes the pragmatic meaning of words from the perspective of the relevance theory.It first introduces a few essential concepts of relevance theory,such as context,optimal relevance,pragmatic meaning and the like.Then,it deals with the pragmatic meaning of words through analysis of examples.We hold that we should consider the relevance between context and words' meaning,and thus interpret the pragmatic meaning of words correctly.
