Abstract

AIM: To observe the expression of S100A4 protein in ovarian serous carcinoma and to explore the relationship between the protein expression of S100A4 and the clinicopathological features/prognosis of the patients with ovarian serous adenocarcinoma.METHODS: The expression levels of S100A4 protein in ovarian serous adenocarcinoma, ovarian serous adenoma and ovarian borderline serous adenoma were detected by the method of immunohistochemistry. The relationship between the expression of S100A4 protein and the clinicopathological features/survival of the patients was statistically analyzed.RESULTS: The results of immunohistochemistry showed that the positive expression of S100A4 protein was located in karyon and cytoplasm. The high expression rates were 78% in ovarian serous adenocarcinoma,30% in ovarian borderline serous adenoma and 27% in ovarian serous adenoma. The high expression rate of S100A4 protein in ovarian serous adenocarcinoma group was higher than that in any of the 2 control groups, and the difference was statistically significant. The high expression of S100A4 protein in ovarian serous adenocarcinoma was significantly correlated to tumor differentiation and recurrence after treatment(P0.05).Survival analysis was performed in 69 cases of ovarian serous adenocarcinoma and the result of single-factor analysis showed that the expression of S100A4 protein was the correlative factor of progression-free survival and overall survival(P0.05).The result of Cox proportional hazards regression model analysis indicated that residual disease after surgery and tumor differentiation were the independent prognostic factors of ovarian serous adenocarcinoma.CONCLUSION: Up-regulation of S100A4 protein may play a role in the carcinogenesis and development of ovarian serous adenocarcinoma.Ovarian serous adenocarcinoma with high grade may enhance the abilities of invasiveness and metastasis partly by the way of up-regulation of S100A4 protein expression.S100A4 protein may be one of the biological markers for recurrence risk prediction and prognosis estimation.
