Abstract
The Rites of the Zhou Dynasty was a kind of standards and norms which had been taken by the ruling class to maintain their public order.The explanation of Confucius' theory of humanity were quite rich,but the most essential one was about benevolence.This thought had a close relationship with the thought of humanism which was prevalent before the Qing Dynasty.In fact,Confucius's ultimate aim was to build an ideal society of Great Harmony,which he knew it was impossible to realize.That was why Confucius put forward to resume the Rites of the Zhou Dynasty.He could not understand the developing principle of society.Facing the turbulent situation and ruthless massacre,Confucius raised a thought from the viewpoint of cherishing people that benevolence was to restrain oneself and resume the Rites of the Zhou Dynasty.
