Effect of telmisartan on essential hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the effect and safety of telmisartan on patients with mild and moderate essential hypertension and left ventricular hypertrohpy. Methods One hundred and ninety eight patients with mild and moderate essential hypertension were studied .The test group (n=99) were taken telmisartan (40~80mg/d) and the control group (n=99) were taken losartan (50~100mg/d)for 24 weeks. The blood pressure was measured once a week. The effect of drugs was assessed by dynamic blood pressure for 24 hours and color Doppler echocardiographic examinations at pre and post therapy.Results Telmisartan could reduce the blood pressure as well as losartan ,but the effect of telmisartan on controling mean DBP in 24 hours was better than losartan (P0.01).Telmisartan could regress left ventricular hypertrophy and improve left ventricular diastolic function, but there was no significantly difference between two group(P0.05) . Conclusion The effect of telmisartan on patients with essential hypertension is definite, and telmisartan can reverse left ventricular hypertrophy .
