Glittering Glory in History——On Chinese Traditional Literature and New Literature of the May 4th Movement of 1919

new literature' position absolutely against tradition does not mean absolutely negating Chinese traditional literatures because the light of history can not be concealed or written off. The success of history can not be cut apart by the challenge of the idea against tradition, because Wusi new literature were deeply affected by Chinese traditional literature either in the way of thinking or in the techniques of aesthetic expression. The ignorance of Chinese traditional literature has been a serious problem not only in the study of Wusi literature but also in literature studies during the whole twentieth century. The study of Chinese new literature in most periods was so monopolized by western literature values and critic discourses that western theories almost became the unique critic discourses in Chinese literature studies during the twentieth century. It brought many shortcomings to the literature studies,hampered the construction of new Chinese literature, and also hindered the creation of new vernacular works. So the ignorance of traditional literature in Chinese literature studies must be abandoned.
