Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of three electronic apex locators(Propex,Raypex 5 and Root ZX) on detecting root perforations. Methods: Forty fresh extracted premolar teeth were perforated in root canal by ultrasonic tip.An in vitro apex locating model was established.Three electronic apex locators(Propex,Raypex 5 and Root ZX) were used to detect the inner or external root canal perforation and compared the reliability of the instruments by statistical analysis. Results: Most locators detected the external location of root canal perforation, and the clinical accuracy of Propex(90%) was higher than Raypex 5(87.5%) and Root ZX(85%),but no statistical difference was found(P 0.05).Conclusion: For teeth with perforation in root canal therapy, the Propex,Raypex 5 and Root ZX electronic apex locators can detect the perforation with high accuracy.
