Assessment of measure and results in elimination of lymphatic filariasis in Tengzhou City

Objective To assess the meaures and results in elimination of lymphatic filariasis in Tenchou City.Methods Data concerning the control of lymphatic filariasis in various stages were collected and analyzed.Results The microfilarial rate before antifilarial campaign in 1957) was 25.3% and the incidence of chronic filaariasis was 5.95%.After a serious of control meaures were taken inclduing epidmiological surveys,vector control,mass drug prophylaxis,and tratment with medicated salt(DEC),the microfilarial rate dropped to below 1%,to be the first province in China to atain the criteria of elimination of lymphatic filariasis.The microfialarial rate was 0～0.12% 16 years after longitudinal surveillance and the natural infection of mosquito vectors were 0-0.61%.The chronic lymphatic filariasis cases were systematically and effectively treated with various means.The incidence of filarial edema,filarial chyluria and hydroedema was reduced from 5.95% before control to 0.97% 10 years after the disease was eliminated.Conclusion The integrated control measures with elimination of source of infection as the main work,especially mass DEC campaign are the main key in attaining the objective of elimination of filariasis in this propvince.
