Abstract
OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the therapeutic effect of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) in the diagnosis and treatment of malignant pleural effusion.METHODS: One hundred and twenty consecutive patients with pleural effusion were studied prospectively. These patients underwent pleural biopsy by VATS procedure and were identified as malignant diseases. All cases also underwent the pleurodesis by spraying talc powder and cisplatin to the thoracic cavity.RESULTS: Pleural effusion of all patients improved completely after operation. No recurrence was found during a follow-up of 1-24 months term.CONCLUSIONS: VATS produces good results in the diagnosis of the origin of pleural effusion. The pleurodesis procedure which spray talc powder and cisplatin to the thoracic cavity is an effective method to rein the malignant pleural effusion.[
