Abstract
Objective To study the prevalence rate of hypertension and the risk factors in the elderly people in Chan Cheng district in Foshan. Methods A cohort of 3382 people age above 60 years old was surveyed by a standardized protocol. Blood pressure, body height and weight, blood lipid, blood glucose, OGTT and blood uric acid were examined. Results The mean BP in this cohort of population was 126/77 mmHg which was increased along with age. The crude prevalence rate of hypertension was 39.5%, and the age-adjusted rate was 40.0%. Compared with the prevalence of hypertension (Foshan) in 1993, the present prevalence rate of hypertension seems to be decreased(40.0% vs 51.5%). The crude prevalence rate of isolated systolic hypertension(ISH) was 21.3%, and the age-adjusted rate was 21.6%, the prevalence rate of ISH increased progressively with aging. New found-hypertension was 40.1% and ISH was 53.9% among hypertension patients. It is found that the prevalence rate of hyperlipidemia, hyperuricemia, overweight and hyperglucosemia in hypertension were higher than that in normotensives (P0.01-0.05). Conclusion Hypertension and the risk factors were closely related. The high prevalence rate of hypertension Foshan in Guangdong suggesting more aggressive strategies toward prevention and treatment of hypertension should be highlighted.
