Abstract

In this study, (NH4)2SO4, yeast extract and peptone have been investigated as nitrogen sources respectively for xylanase production by a strain of Trichoderma reesei. The results showed that the nitrogen sources had a marked effect on the activity of xylanase produced by T. reesei. Compared with (NH4)2SO4 and the peptone, the yeast extract was the best nitrogen source to produce xylanase. When the yeast extract was used as the nitrogen source, the highest activity, 25.47 IU/mL, was obtained with 7 g/L xylan as a substrate, with the yield and productivity being 3638.6 IU per gram of xylan and 8490.0 IU/Ld, separately. The xylanase activity was 1.5 times as high as that obtained with (NH4)2SO4, and 2.0 times as high as that prepared with peptone as the nitrogen source.
