Abstract
The essay probes deep into the true side of Wang Guowei, his searching for the meaning of life, psychological incentive for being anguished all his life, and his attitude towards academic study. It tries to show that Wang Guowei observed the existence of life and values in the position of modern humanism. His academic studies reflected his quest for the meaning of individual life, in which his viewpoints on the realm of thoughts of those would-be modern scholars and academies went beyond the time and nations. Therefore, Wang Guowei is the so-called pioneer in humanism and academic independence in China early in the 20th century.
