On Cultural Connotation of English-Chinese Animal Words

Abstract

There are quite a few words denoting animals both in English and Chinese.Through the historical evolution and social development,cultural connotations gradually get established into these animal words.This paper firstly categorizes four types of cultural connotation,namely,equivalence,similarity,defaulting and opposition.Then it elaborates the causes from four aspects: modes of thinking,values,and cultural tradition and evolution of language.
