Abstract

Periurban areas are considered as suitable geographic units to achieve coordinated urban and rural development. And they are ideal sites for analyzing processes of interaction between urban and rural areas and hence to provide justifications for urban-rural integration policies.Baiyun district and its four towns in the northern Guangzhou city are chosen as the case to study the relational change among farmers, agricultural land and village in a context of rapid urbanization. The research draws the following a few conclusions:(i) most farmers managed to acquire non-agricultural employment in periurban areas and the role of agricultural land as a last resort of social security has been deminishing;(ii)different villages pursued different models of development due to locational and institutional differences;(iii) conversion of agricultural land to construction land became a large income source for farmers;(iv) the spatial heterogeneity resulted from self-development by villages had become a strength of urban growth toward qualitiative improvement. The paper proposes to protect the ecological functions of agricultural land, strictly control agricultural land conversion, and improve quality of life of local residents by enlarging construction land rights of collectives.
