Abstract
Objective To investigate the effect of genistein on human hepatocarcinoma cell line SMMC-7721.Methods The effect of genistein on the growth of SMMC-7721 cells was evaluated by MTT assay in vitro, cell cycle analysis and characteristic ultrastructural alterations. Results Genistein was effective in inhibiting the proliferation of SMMC-7721 cells.Cell cycle analysis indicated that the number of cells was increased in G2/M phase. The inhibitory effect of genistein was confimed by characteritic ultrastructural alterations. Conclusion Genistein inhibits the proliferation of hepatocarcinoma cell line SMMC-7721 in vitro mainly by altering the cell cycle and ultrastructure.
