A Probe into Two Concepts of Liberty

Abstract

In his classical essay Two Concepts of Liberty,Isaiah Berlin defines positive liberty in four ways: asceticist liberty of self-salvation,rationalist liberty of self-realization,collective and socialized form of self-affirmation,republicanist liberty emphasizing political involvement and self-legislation.Berlin's conceptions of positive liberty and negative liberty do not correspond with Benjamin Constant's Liberty of Ancients and Moderns in a simple way.The relationship between the two concepts of liberty is a dialectic one.
