Cataract extraction with IOL implantation:an analysis of 1 700 cases

Objective To investigate the outcome of cataract extraction with IOL implantation in patients with different types of cataract. Methods A retrospective analysis was carried out on 10 different types of cataract. Results Postoperative corrected visual acuity of 0.5 or better was 89.6% in senile cataract group,66.2% in high myopia cataract,75.2% in diabetic cataract,51.4% in glaucoma cataract,68.5% in longevity cataract(over 80 years old),71.8% in traumatic cataract,50.5% in congenital cataract,46.2% in glaucoma postoperative cataract,61.7% in uveitis cataract,91.7% in Fuch syndrome.Excluding Fuch syndrome,the percentage of postoperative visual acuities0.5 in senile cataract group were higher than those in other groups(P0.05). Conclusions Cataract extraction with the IOL implantation is an effective treatment for cataract.The surgical results in patients with other complications are not satisfying,but improvement can be achieved in most cases.So surgery should not be given up.
