Properties and Toughening Mechanism of Epoxy Resin/Montmorillonite Nanocomposite

Abstract

Epoxy resin/montmorillonite nancomposite was prepared with org-montmorillonite adding to epoxy resin.the mechanical properties and thermal property of epoxy resin/montmorillonite nano-composite were researched.The results showed that the impact strength and fracture intensity were largely improved with only addition of 5 % org-montmorillonite,and the heat distortion temperature was improved 6.1 ℃ with addition of 3 % org-montmorillonite.Microstructure of the impact sample fracture surface of epoxy resin/montmorillonite nano-composite was characterized by SEM and AFM.It inferred that the fracture of the sample showed a obvious toughness fracture.Strengthen and toughen mechanisms about epoxy resin/montmorillonite were discussed.It was believed that the toughening mechanism of epoxy resin by org-montmorillonite confirmed to the mechanism of yielding and toughening.
