Abstract

Objective To observe the expression of aquaporin-4(AQP4) in brain of patients with gliomas. Methods Brain specimens of 16 patients with gliomas and 12 control were collected. RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry was used to observe the expression of AQP4 in brain. Results It was found that AQP4 immunoreactive cells were mainly astrocytes in brain. Compared with that of the control group, AQP4 expression in brain specimens of patients with gliomas showed an obviously statistical increasing at both mRNA and protein levels (P0.01). The distribution of AQP4 were different in low- and high-grade gliomas, the AQP4 expression in high-grade gliomas was higher than that in low-grade gliomas (P0.05).Conclusions AQP4 overexpression in brain may be concerned with secondary cerebral edema induced by gliomas.
