Abstract

Objective To observe histopathological changes of rhinophyma(late-stage rosacea)and to discuss the relationship between the Demodex parasite and histopathological changes of rhinophyma(late-stage rosacea).Methods Seventeen skin specimens of patients with rosacea were collected.After AAF liquid fixation,paraffin embedding,and sectioning,HE staining was performed along with histopathological observation and analysis.Results(1)Epidermal hyperplasia was associated with hyperkeratosis,keratin plug formation,varying degrees of fibrous connective tissue proliferation,and superficial dermal capillary proliferation,congestion,and expansion.Skin samples had irregular expansion of follicles,infiltration of inflammatory cells,and expansion of sebaceous glands in the form of pockets.(2)Most Demodex mite infections were moderate to severe,and there was a positive correlation between the number of infecting mites and the severity of pathological changes.Conclusion There is quite a close relationship between the human Demodex parasite and the histopathological changes of rhinophyma(late-stage rosacea).Infection by a large number of mites plays a decisive role in the pathogenesis of rosacea.
