Comparative study about the effect of aripiprazole and olanzapine on body mass,glycolipid metabolism in patients with first-episode schizophrenia

Objective To explore the influence of aripiprazole and olanzapine on body mass,glycolipid metabolism in patients with first-episode schizophrenia.Methods 60 patients with first-episode schizophrenia were randomly divided into two groups treated with aripiprazole and olanzapine respectively for 3 months.Body mass,fasting blood glucose and lipids,which included cholesterol(TC),triglyceride(TG),low density lipoprotein(LDL) and high density lipoprotein(HDL) were measured at the baseline and at the end of the treatment.Results At the end of the treatment,all the indexies in aripiprazole group showed no significant changes when compared with the baseline(P0.05).In olanzapine group,however,the body mass,fasting blood glucose,TC and TG all increased significantly after 3 months treatment(P0.05).Conclusion Aripiprazole has no serious affects on body mass and glycolipid metabolism.But olanzapine can cause weight gain,as well as the increase of blood glucose,cholesterol and triglycerides.
