Clinical value of C-reactive protein level and WBC count

Abstract

Objective To discuss the clinical value of C-reactive protein(CRP)level and white blood cell(WBC)count in diagnosis of bacterial and viral infection,as well as therapeutic effect evaluation of antibiotics.Methods The serum level of CRP was determined with immunoturbidimetry,and WBC count was performed with tri-sorting haemacytometry.Results The serum levels of CRP in bacterial infection group(n=246),viral infection group(n=258)and healthy control group(n=205)were(57.8±20.5)mg/L,(3.8±2.5)mg/L,and(2.7±1.9)mg/L respectively;WBC count(×109):15.2±3.9,7.2±2.1,5.6±1.6,respectively.There were statistical differences in levels of CRP and WBC between bacterial infection group and healthy control group;whereas there were no significant differences between viral infection group and healthy control group.In bacterial infection group,108 cases with elevated CRP and WBC were improved in symptoms after antibiotic treatment for 6-8 days;95.4% of the patients had significantly declined CRP,82.4% of the patients had significantly decreased WBC count,13.9% had no significant change,and 3.7% had elevated WBC count.Conclusion As the indicators of discriminating bacterial and viral infection,CRP and WBC count can be used as ideal markers of inflammatory reaction.In most cases,under effective antibiotic treatment,the levels of CRP and WBC are obviously declined,especially the level of CRP.
