Diagnostic and Prognostic Value of Facial Nerve Electrogram and Blink Reflex Facial Paralysis

Abstract

Objective To evaluate facial nerve electrogram and blink reflex in patients with facial paralysis.Methods Facial nerve electrogram and blink reflex were measured in 68 patients with facial paralysis and 6 months after the onset.Results Missing R1,R2 and R2' waves were absent in 8 cases;missing R1,the latencies of R2 and R2' were prolonged in 18 cases;the latencies of R1,R2 and R2' were prolonged in 42 cases.Blink reflex was higher than that of the facial nerve electrogram(P0.01).When reviewed,6 cases of 26 cases of severe damaged patients could be detected with various waveforms,the improvement rate was 23.1%;21 cases of 27 moderate damaged patients recovered,3 cases improved;after 1~3 months 15 cases of mild damaged patients recovered.Conclusion Blink reflex could be used as an objective index for the early diagnosis of facial paralysis,and it has an important role in evaluating the degrees of facial nerve and prognosis.
